What is Cardiac Rehabilitation and is it for you?
Cardiac Rehab can be a valuable tool to improve your health and quality of life whether you have had a cardiac event or have risk factors for heart disease and want to prevent one. Cardiac Rehab can help to strengthen your heart after a cardiac event, like a heart attack, surgery, angioplasty, diagnosis of coronary artery disease, etc (Phase II) or it can be preventative in nature (Phase III). There are different phases to Cardiac Rehabilitation depending on your needs. The following information will assist you and your doctor to in determining which phase is right for you.

This is the immediate recovery phase done in the hospital after a cardiac event. It is designed to slowly re-introduce you to physical activity and give you general information about lifestyle changes and risk factor modification. If you have had a cardiac event, you probably received information on risk factor modification while you were in the hospital, please read on for information on what to do next.
This phase is a 12-week physician referred and cardiac monitored program. It is located in a state of the art gym in the Ambulatory Care Center at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. The program includes individualized exercise training, education, nutrition counseling, and support. It is usually recommended for people who have had a cardiac event or are at significant risk for a cardiac event. Individualized goals are set for each person whether it is to return to work, get more energy, to increase strength or a variety of other goals. This phase of cardiac rehabilitation is designed as a life-long fitness program to reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease. It may be a continuation of the lifestyle changes made in Phase II, or, it may be appropriate if you have 2 or more cardiac risk factors and wish to improve your cardiac health. This program is located at the Arena Club in Bel Air and is a partnership utilizing the expertise of Upper Chesapeake Medical Center and The Arena Club Staff.
